In this particular movie set in the year 1937, a farmer named Arun travels to a different place called Gadar to meet his friend. When he arrives at that place, he meets a beautiful girl named Saana, who is the daughter of the village headman Khajuja. He falls in love with her but she refuses his proposal because she loves someone else. He breaks up with her and eventually leaves back home after spending his time with Saana. When he returns back, his father tells him that his mother has died due to severe coughing disease. He then starts working in the fields at the same farm he had worked in before. Saana's mother comes to know that her daughter loves Arun and thinks that this is why Arun is not interested in marrying her. She tells her daughter to throw away the ring she had given him earlier when they are alone together. But she doesn't do so and throws it in a waste bin instead. She then sends her daughter to the village headman's house to be married off with another man named Puran who is also a widower. Arun then finds out that Saana is about to be married and he rushes back home. He tries to convince her father that he loves Saana but her father does not believe him. To the contrary, Puran is told by the village headman to marry off his daughter with Arun because Puran's wife has died earlier. Even Saana's mother asks all the villagers to make Arun leave after telling her husband that she does not want Saana to be happy with Arun. But she still wants things between Puran and Saana work out well. The village headman then asks Puran where is his proof that his wife has died.
